You’ll have seen it on the clicks “VEGAN DIET RUINED ME!” You’ll have heard it on the grapevine “My girlfriend was vegan for a week and nearly died!”
The word ‘vegan’ is being thrown around like a B12 supplement at a vegan potluck. It’s been latched onto ethical products, slipped into wellness programs and catapulted into the unforgivable diet realm. This realm is brutal and champions the quick results paradox that we yearn for. A vegan diet has been celebrated as the Amazon Prime of diets.
There’s no doubt, people are thriving as vegans; including professional athletes. But as soon as it delivers the goods, it spits out the catastrophes.
“I’ve lost all my energy being vegan” “My farts smell bad #thanksbutnoveganthanks” “Veganism slept with my wife!"
And here lies the danger of vegan being the name for a great variety of diets. It’s turned into an umbrella term for potentially damaging diets; potentially damaging veganism. So before we go any further, here is the official Vegan Society definition:
Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose.
When influential vegans such as Tim Shieff turn around and say "Veganism made me sick”, what he is really saying is a specific plant-based diet, fasting extensively and drinking his own (and others) piddle juice may have made him sick. Many others have screamed their failures on a 'vegan diet’, which in reality are diets such as:
Plant-based keto Plant-based junk food Raw plat-based Potatoes
A wholefoods plant-based diet has been backed to the hills by studies as the best diet around. Even so, little Jimmy Jimkins may be intolerant to organic cabbage and big Susie Socks may have an allergic reaction to soy. This doesn’t and shouldn’t rule out a wholefoods plant-based diet. It just means Susie stops with the soy and Jimmy holds back on the sauerkraut.
Being vegan is not what you put in your mouth, it’s what you choose not to contribute to. That means leaving meat off your plate, replacing milk and eggs with whatever works, and stop supporting cruel exploitation of animals in labs, entertainment, fashion and domestication. It doesn’t mean eating bowls of baby kale hearts then complaining that veganism is not the answer.
The crux of it all is that veganism is not about you, it’s about animals. A plant-based diet is about you, your health, the planet. So when you hear others rejecting their own veganism because of their health, take it with a pinch of Pink Himalayan Salt. When you feel the plant-based diet your currently on isn’t working for you, try cutting certain foods out, bringing others in, get a food tolerance test! If you feel strongly about preventing animal abuse, you will find a way that works for you. After all, we are blessed as omnivores - we can eat whatever the heck we want, with a near endless list of plant-based foods available to us. So why wouldn’t we choose the kindest lifestyle around?
